Mr G, 22 years old, South Island New Zealand. Mr G was involved in a high-speed road traffic accident involving another car. Mr G suffered a severe back injury that required over a month in hospital in Auckland's specialist spinal unit. Because Mr G was travelling alone, we arranged for his mother to join him in New Zealand and paid for flights and accommodation and after a long period of recuperation, we arranged for him and his mother to fly home on first class reclining seats. Upon return to the UK, we also supported Mr G in a legal expense claim and paid for a specialist legal counsel to pursue a personal injury claim in New Zealand. Although the medical expenses incurred in New Zealand were covered by the reciprocal health care arrangements in force, the total expenses incurred still exceeded £10,000. Had the accident happened in the USA, medical expenses could have exceeded £50,000.

Mr R, 27 years old, India. Whilst travelling with a group of friends on a train in Northern India, Mr R was a victim of a terrorist bomb attack that left him with a severed arm. After emergency treatment locally to save the arm, Mr R was repatriated with his companions by air ambulance. Costs incurred also exceeded £10,000.

Ms F, 23 years old. Ms F, after extensive travel in the Far East succumbed to a feverish illness whilst travelling in Bangladesh. After several days of feeling unwell Ms F decided to continue her onward journey to Singapore as local medical facilities did not install any confidence. On arrival in Singapore she was rushed to the Raffles medical centre by Singapore airlines ground crew who also arranged for our 24-hour emergency service to be contacted. Ms F was diagnosed as suffering with Dengue fever and had to spend several days in hospital. Upon her discharge we arranged for her to travel on to friends in Sydney to convalesce as her existing ticket involved several stopovers to Melbourne where she was then due to travel overland to Sydney. Costs for treatment and onward flights exceeded £5,000.

Mr T, whilst travelling in Thailand had his backpack stolen on an overnight train journey to Bangkok. Mr T continued his journey to Australia at which time he contacted our claims handlers. Because of the long delay before his return to the UK, we settled his claim whilst he was in Australia and forwarded a cheque for over £700 which Mr T could cash in Oz.

Miss J and Miss D were robbed at knifepoint in Tanzania and deprived of their possessions and travel tickets. After contacting our emergency service we arranged onward travel to South Africa where they were due to stay with family and forwarded a claims form for the settlement of their property claim which awaited them on their return to the UK.

Mr S whilst travelling in India fell asleep on an overnight bus journey. He was awoken in the middle of the night to find a rat chewing his favourite Nikki trainers (perhaps thinking there was some fine cheese buried in there!). His shock was compounded when on checking his backpack he found a large hole bored into it by rats who seemed intent on setting up home there. Despite a standard exclusion of damage caused by vermin that applies to most types of property insurance, we felt it was reasonable to settle his claim of several hundred pounds. Mr S was not required to obtain corroboration from the rats in question!
